Clayton Chatters’ Dinning Hall

The dinning hall was originally built in 1938 as the Rain or Shine Pavilion and then later enclosed to be the dinning hall in the 1950s.  The dinning hall was dedicated to the first camp director of Canyon Camp, and a co-founder of the camp—Clayton Chatter who served as camp director from 1936—1937.

The dinning hall was built in a unique octagon shape instead of a typical rectangle or square.  This arrangement allows for the center part of the dinning hall to be used as the main forum during the meals by the staff to give announcements or put on skits for entertainment.
