O.W.L.—Outdoor Wilderness League

The Outdoor Wilderness League offers new ideas and skills for your older Scouts and Leaders. Scouts

must be at least First Class and be at least 14 years old or older. Leaders and Scouts wishing to use

canoes in the program must pass

Possible Leader Training Sessions Availbe at camp this season

The training will be directed to specific needs of adult leadrse of Boy Scout Troops and Ventureing Crews, although older Scouts would benefit from attending most of the sessions.  (Specific Cub Scout or Webelos training wil not be discussed.)  Hands-on experieence will be part of almost all sessions-that includes water sessions with canoes and kayaks (must be 'Swimminer').  All of the training sessions will incorporate Leave No Trace principles as an integral part of instruction. 

Safety and Health

Wilderness First Aid Instruction (12 - 16 hours) - Red Cross instruction program that leads to Wilderness First Aid certificaiton as required by the BSA. 16 hours which inclueds 4 hours of adult CPR for certification.

Planning and Conduction a Safe Scout Outing (1 hour) - Introductory seminar and use of the Guide to Safe Scouting in unit activities, tour permits required leader training, physical exams, 8-point Safe Swim Plan, Ssafety Afloat, and informed parental consent. Basic administration of an outdoor activity with an emphasis on organization, informed parental consent, and communication.

Camp Sanitation (1 hour) - safe preparation and s torage of food, water purificaiotn techniques, preventing animal incursions, campsite layout, waste disposal, and personal and camp cleanliness.

Planning/Organization

Organizing High Adventure Trips (Passbook to High Adventure)(1 hour)- discussion of and how to use the Passbook to High Adventure in conjunction with the Guide to Safe Scouting to organize a high adventure trip.

High Adventure Planning (1 hour) - how to plan and execute a unit high adventure activity. Emphasis on selecting an activity, systemaatic planning, documentation, and communication. This is a follow up to the previous traning session.

International Travel ( 1 hour)- How to take a unit trip out of the United STates. Includes a discussion of passports, and visas, financial aspects, communication, transportation (and jet leg), food, equipemtn, BSA forms and approvals, and parental informed consent.

Using EBay to Buy Equipemnt (1/2 hour) - Seminar to introduce leaders to the 'joys' of buying equipment on EBay. Essentials such as registration, evaluation of products and seller, bidding strategies, and payments.

Food and Meals

Making Your Own Trail Food (1-2 hours) - How to make and pack your own lightweight, dry meals for high adventure treks. Sources of food, recipes, pre-trip preparation, drying foods, and preparation.

Cooking with the Outback Oven and Bakepacker (1-2 hours) - How to prepare meals with the Outback Oven and Bakepacker. Recipes and specific instructions with hands-on cooking experience.

On The Trail Cooking (1-2 hours) - Essentials of cooking while backpacking, canoeing, etc. Includes stoves, chef's kits, pan sets, specialized gear, menu planning, sanitation, cleanup, and organization. Hands-on cooking experience.

Skills Instruction

Mechanics of High Adventure Camping (1hour) - Managing a unit on high adventure activity. This includes meal preparation, shelter, sanitation, safety, camp arrangement, and boy leadership.

Introduction to Leave No Trace Camping (1 hour) - Practical application of the LNT (leave no trace) principles to unit camping.

Flatwater canoe training (2-4 hours) - basic canoe instruction for flatwater (lake or slow river) canoeing. Includes Safety Afloat, equipment, handling a canoe, basic recues, strokes, and safety. ACA course.

Kayaking BSA (1-2 hours) - introductory kayaking to earn the Kayaking BSA Award. Knowledge of kayaks and whitewater, equipment, basic reccues, reading the river, grear, safety, and organization of a whitewater trek.

Backpacking seminar (1-2 hours) - Discussion and demonstration of equipment, location, preparation, on-trail orgranization, food, water, sanitation, map, and compass work.

Operation O.W.L. is comprised of a variety of activities. Scouts and Leaders who would like to participate

in this challenging program should register Sunday evening.
